WHY SPAIN AND PORTUGAL
One of the world’s leading destinations for gastronomic tourism. With a population of 48 million, Spain welcomes over 80 million visitors every year — and around 14 million come specifically for its cuisine.

In The World’s 100 Best Restaurants 2023, ten Spanish restaurants made the list — holding the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places. As of 2024, Spain boasts 272 Michelin-starred restaurants, including:
  • 225 with one star
  • 32 with two stars
  • 15 with three stars

Madrid is the heart of Spanish gastronomy. The capital brings together all 15 regional cuisines and nearly every major international one — from Peru and Japan to Lebanon and Portugal. Madrid is home to 28 Michelin-starred restaurants (36 stars total) and 22 Bib Gourmand venues, offering exceptional value and quality.
World-renowned chefs — Dani García, Quique Dacosta, Jesús Sánchez, Gastón Acurio, Enrique Olvera, and even the legacy of Joël Robuchon — have chosen Madrid as their creative base, turning the city into one of Europe’s leading gastronomic laboratories.
Spain
Portugal is an increasingly attractive destination for internships and professional training — welcoming students, graduates, and culinary professionals in gastronomy, pastry, hospitality, and restaurant management.

The country embodies the emerging concept of “Atlantic Cuisine” — blending rich culinary heritage, high educational standards, and exceptional opportunities for professional growth.

As of 2025, Portugal is home to:
  • 38 restaurants with one Michelin star
  • 8 restaurants with two Michelin stars

Northern Portugal, especially the Douro Valley, is the birthplace of world-famous Port wine. Its terraced vineyards and unique microclimate create ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional quality. For aspiring sommeliers and F&B directors, understanding Portugal’s winemaking traditions is an essential part of their professional education.
